Reminder

A reminder that Yvonne Ankerman - one of our  finest local artists  - will be giving a talk and showing photos of her recent trip up to the Norwegian Fiords.  Yvonne's presentations are always very interesting , so we urge you to please support her, and our Society.  Please diarise  Wednesday evening at 7 pm - Nerina Gardens Hall.  We will again be having a substantial raffle and a glass of wine or fruit juice at R 5.00

Paint out at Kirstenbosch

A wonderful autumn day, plenty of sunshine and the ever-gorgeous gardens at Kirstenbosch. Tuesday's entry to the botanical gardens is free for South African senior citizens so what better day for a paintout. Throw in good coffee and snacks at the restaurant, and a fire on the mountains behind, and all the ingredients to keep FHAS members occupied were present.

Regretably not many people took advantage of this paint out but those who made the effort thoroughly enjoyed the morning.

Ronnie Biccard's workshop

Tuesday this week, artist Ronnie Biccard brought her enthusiasm and creativity to Fish Hoek Art Society in the form of an unusual workshop. Some 16 FHAS members and friends attended and left with some 'interesting' collage portraits and some very sticky fingers.

Participants brought scissors and a mirror and the object was to create cut and paste portraits with paint, paper and bits of newspapers or magazines.



There was much peering in the mirror and not a few humorous comments as we faced our reality.

  

 

Ronnie stressed that we had to leave behind preconceived notions, fear, traditional boundaries and expectations and all our creative juices to flow. She encouraged experimentation and exploration and to imbibe our work with fun and laughter.

It sounds fairly easy... Her own portrait was a beautiful colourful creation.

Looking back to the NOORDHOEK PLEIN AIR FESTIVAL

Saturday, 10 days ago, Andew Hart and Roger Melvill, two Noordhoek residents and keen artists, organised the first Plein Air Festival in the valley.

Exceedingly professional, highly organised and great fun, it turned out to be a major success with painters, buyers and the interested public: one that perhaps may become an annual event. The organisers managed to get some fabulous sponsorship from local companies and the assistance of Fish Hoek scouts.
















If you recall from the blog poster, artists were invited to subscribe and to take part in a day paint out anywhere - public or private, with permission - in the Noordhoek Valley.

The works were to be sold by auction in the evening and 30 percent of the sales were destined towards security measures in the valley. Franck Dangereux organised Noordhoek Village with a huge tent, and kiosks selling food and drink.

With mixed weather conditions the day started with participants indicating on a big map where they planned to paint.

A number of painters from FHAS went along to paint in the morning, and again to come back for the social events at the Farm Village in the afternoon.

Maureen didn't spend the whole day on the beach but she turned out a beautiful watercolour.

Karen Davel (above right) brought her sewing machine and did this much-discussed beautiful work of art combining sewing and painting.

The idea was that you could go and visit artists and see them at work, be it in a field, the Farm Village, Cape Point Vineyards, someone's garden or down on the beach. Then as of 4pm the works were displayed back at the Farm Village.

Andrew Hart proved to be an excellent auctioneer and brought a degree of professionalism (and success - he managed to auction some 55 of the 60 works) to the proceedings that no one had anticipated. He held the audience spellbound as he brought the bids higher and higher.

     

His back up team kept tabs on the whole day.

Derric Van Rensburg was the artist whose work fetched the highest price:  R30,000. He had also produced two works that day. Fast worker Derric!!! Andrew Cooper came in second in high sales with a work that went for R25,000.

All the works were on display on easels (thanks to Chapman's Hardware sponsorship and Andrew Hart's prowess in making all those easels) while visitors were able to drink, eat and chat nearby.

Should this event prove a regular one, Fish Hoek Art Society could surely take a role in helping and participating.

Paint-out

Paint-out at Kirstenbosch Gardens on Tuesday 17th.  Meet John at the Fish Hoek Civic Centre parking at 9.30 am, or at the ticket office at the top parking of the gardens at 10 am.  Entrance for pensioners is free but bring your ID.  The weather forecast is ok for Tuesday but bring a jacket as the wind can be chilly.

Fiona will be on her way back overseas tonight and we wish her well until we see her again in October.  It was lovely to see some of our members at the Noordhoek Village art exhibition and auction on Saturday, and Fiona will be posting some photos on the blog once she has settled down.

Ronnie Biccard special workshop - 10 APRIL

Ronnie Biccard is coming once again to offer one of her unique workshops on 10th April, Nerina Gardens. We look forward to being challenged and having a great afternoon.

   

Ronnie is well known for her highly coloured and whimsical works in acrylics but this multi talented artist is also a master (mistress?) of multi media forms.

    

The workshop promises to be great fun and very stimulating.

Looking at Me Looking at You

This will be a mixed media portraits workshop with a twist.

What you need to bring with you

A looking glass-mirror

Paper A2 for final piece

Paper for prep drawings A4 (at least 5 pieces )

A thick black permanent marker

Pencils.

Glue/ gel medium or wood glue.

Also bring a mix of materials and mediums you like to work with:

Paint brushes, fluid acrylics, watercolours, ccrylics, oil pastels, 

soft pastels, wax crayons, pencil crayons,

some collage materials - old magazines, old paintings to tear up,

tissue paper, newspaper, music scores, old receipts, tickets old letters etc etc....

In her own words, Ronnie explains that this will be:

"A workshop connecting to your creative self, leaving judgement and  preconceived ideas at home!!!
A workshop letting go of fear, boundaries and expectations.
A workshop creating with mixed media experimentation.
A workshop allowing your creative juices to flow.
A workshop of exploring and sharing with others. "
