The Alma Bing Evening at Fish Hoek Art Society is a highlight of the artistic year in this part of the Cape Peninsula and it fell on Wednesday 28th November this year. It was held in the auditorium of Nerina Gardens. The evening was organised by hard-working committee members who laid out the works of art and kindly set up the auditorium prior to the event.
On this occasion an external judge awards handwritten certificates of merit for the best works of art submitted in various categories on that evening and this is followed by the awarding of the Alma Byng Trophy to the best overall artist in the Fish Hoek Art Society exhibiting at the annual event.
There were a large number of entries in the full range of media used by local artists which made judging hard for guest judge, Liz Velz – but with some judicious assistance from impartial fellow artists, she finally came up with a list of winners.
Prior to the all important announcements, she drew everyone's attention to the ones that didn't quite make the final choice and was most encouraging in her praise for the work produced in the Society.
Awards went to artists in the following categories:
Flowers/still life Cindy Bath
Miniatures Ann Zwets
Seascapes/boats John Strickland
Landscapes Ian Lamond
Wildlife, birds, animals Ann Zwets
Abstract Betty Salmon
Portraits/people Fiona Nichols
The trophy, awarded in the memory of keen Fish Hoek artist, Alma Byng, was won by Ian Lamond, pictured below holding the Trophy beside his exquisite drawing of dunes and beach.
