Coloured pencils, coloured paper - not what you think!
Tuesday 14th February Fiona Nichols will be demonstrating how to use colour pencils to create vibrant pictures - this isn't coloured pencil as you know it!

Participants are asked to bring along their own coloured pencils and some good paper and she will show tricks and short cuts to producing interesting and original works. She'll also bring along some WIPs and some mistakes to show how we can learn from these and improve skills.

USING COLOURED PENCILS
The key to
successful coloured pencil work is, after good drawing skills, layering. Unlike the process of using water-based coloured pencils, wax and
oil based pencils benefit from multiple layers: as many as your paper and
patience can take. This fills in the ‘hills and valleys’ of your paper and
brings richness of colour to your work. So, the process is fairly laborious but
ultimately rewarding.
CONSIDERATIONS
Tools. You don’t need 100 pencils to start. They blend, especially if restricted
to one make.
24 pencils are
fine to begin working the technique.
A good pencil
sharpener – as the sharper the points, the better – it can be manual, electric
or a cutter blade.
Masking tape to
hold your paper on the page. Also to ‘lift’ off pencil errors.
A burnishing
tool – a great way to blend colours. Remember the darker colours will push
through the lighter ones. Most pencil manufacturers produce a colourless
blender pencil.
A (household
style) paint brush to brush off excess pencil bits and keep work clean.
The right
paper: one that takes multi layers. Paper that doesn’t tear when removing
masking tape. HOT pressed paper is favoured – but it has limited layering
ability as it is smooth. Canson pastel paper. Or good watercolour paper. Or textured
paper. Fisher 400. The US-made Stonehenge is the most popular of all.
Size of work. Don’t think too big – at least in the beginning.
Under
painting. Just in tones. Or monochrome. Or in
opposite colours.
Under painting
in crayons, or in another medium? Acrylic ink. Watercolour. Acrylic paints.
Using solvents
to create move crayon around.
Order of
work. Light to dark is the rule – though tonal
darks can be blocked in first.
Where to
start: consider this first so hands don’t smudge
work.
Direction of
strokes. Haphazard. Cross hatch. Or parallel and
orderly. And orderly, vertical, diagonal etc
How to erase (if you need to). Tape. Rubber. Blue tack.
How to
protect the painting, as you work: Use a mahl stick
or sheet of greaseproof paper.
How to
finish work so it is transportable. Fixative? Use
of glass paper (or cheaper grease-proof baking paper).

DVD evening - David Bellamy
A youthful David Bellamy took us through Andalucia to some of his favourite destinations and although this DVD devoted to plein air sketching was over 20 years old, it was as fresh as the day it was released! Full of interesting tips and generative of an enthusiasm to get out there, and to get sketching.
Sue opened up the library before and after the DVD giving us a chance to browse.
Some 14 members and guests came to see the DVD and among them, Franziska, who used to work on the committee of FHAS and was back in Fish Hoek with a German friend for a short holiday. It was so lovely to see her again!
The DVD started us off with DB sketching in the Alhambra in Granada - amid mega crowds and wearing a silly hat that attracted attention. He suggested we'd be better artists if we blended in to the local scene.
He went on to the Alpujarras and found the gorgeous little town of Pampaneira with its whitewashed walls and ancient lanes.
After some impressive sketching, it was down to the coast:
Tea and coffee was available after the DVD. Cost: a very reasonable R5.
Thanks Rob McAlpine for documenting the evening.

A few pointers regarding the thorny issue of
copyright and
plagiarism.
This particularly applies to those artists wishing to sell
their work.
Illustrated below, one painting is the original and one is the modern copy. Which is which?
Illustrated below, one painting is the original and one is the modern copy. Which is which?

The
design and Artists Copyright Society says ‘copyright is a bundle of rights
which allows you, as the owner of the Copyright in a work, to prevent any other
person from doing various things with the work without your consent’.
·
In
relation to artistic works, ‘copying’ includes making a copy on three dimensions
of a two dimensional work, and vice-versa.
·
The
artist owns the copyright and copyright is established from the moment of
creation – the only qualification is that the work must be original.
·
Copyright
comes into operation automatically and as the owner you have the exclusive
right to authorise the reproduction (copy) of a work in any medium by any other
party. Reproduction may only take place with your consent and is usually
granted with in return for a fee.
·
Copyright
lasts for the lifetime of the visual creator, plus 70 years after death. After
70 years it is no longer protected by copyright.
‘Copying’ means you have ‘incorporated a substantial part of
the work of another artist’ in your work. This is only allowed if you copy for
the purposes of research or private study, but then your work may not be
exhibited or sold and you must acknowledge the original artist. If you enter
your painting in an exhibition or competition and you have used someone else’s
work as inspiration you must state ‘in the style of .........’ or ‘after a painting by ...........’ on the artwork.
So how does this apply to me, the amateur? By all means
copy a picture to ‘learn the style and technique used’ - then, the best
advice is always to use your own photographs and sketches as a base and apply
the technique you have learned to your own work.
Did you guess which was the original? The first image is the original, the second is the modern copy.

In this month’s edition of “Country Life” there is an
article, the first in a series, about buying art as an investment. Art curator
Stefan Hundt discusses the pleasures and pitfalls of buying art which you will
