Dynamic colour - Melanie Meyer, 2pm Tuesday, Nerina

Please support your Society and join us for what promised to be a very interesting and inspiring afternoon.

The paint-out, or should I say paint-in, will be held at my home - 1 Fynbos Rise, off Pass Road Fish Hoek.  Tel: 021 782-6297 or 083 503 7269.  The garden is looking much prettier now that we have had some rain, and if the weather is inclement we can find lots of things to paint or draw indoors.

Don't forget to get painting for the Hugh Murdoch Trophy competition to be held on August the 22nd.  The theme is "Bright Shiny Things".

Dear Members.  Please note that there will be no evening meetings in June or July but the paint-outs and workshops will be held as usual.  Start working on you works for the Hugh Murdoch trophy evening (last Wednesday in August).  The theme is “shiny things” which gives you a lot of scope - think brass, copper, light shining on water.  You can use any medium.  Please contact any of the committee is you need more info on any of the events.  Happy painting.

Results of the annual DRAWING COMPETITION

A cool, wet night and a poor turnout, unfortunately, but some excellent work. John Strickland hosted the evening and discussed the merits of drawing which, it must be stressed, does not just mean graphite pencil.

The theme was, if you recall, 'Shiny Things' which was fairly loosely interpreted.

Artists were given the opportunity to enter up to four pictures each and 18 pictures were displayed.

Cynthia Fletcher organised wine and snacks for the folk who came by and, despite the small numbers, we had an excellent time.

Democratically voted by all present, first prize went to Cynthia for her beautiful work (pictured above - what a great angle to have chosen) while John Strickland and Maureen Copley shared second place.

The winners (after a glass of wine!?)

Thanks Rob and Maureen for the photos.

Take 10 minutes to draw...

A beautiful cup of tea. It's shown in both colour and monochrome.

Take the challenge and draw this cup - 10 minutes for a quick sketch in monochrome, or 30 minutes for something a little more advanced - and remember the reflections in the tea and on the underside of the cup itself.

Thanks to Maureen for allowing me to photograph it at a recent Committee Meeting.

PS the tea was great, Maureen.

And if you want another challenge, I offer you a Mexican girl complete with hat. You can almost hear the famous Mexican Hat Dance music in your head.

Go for it!

Tuesday's SKETCHING WORKSHOP

Armed with a good variety of photographs to inspire,  John Strickland organised a sketching workshop this week.

We were delighted that 16 members and friends came along to try their skills. Some of the photos were pretty complicated, others less so but everyone agreed it was a good challenge and some of the sketches were top notch.

John also brought some of his own amazing sketch books, filled with work done on his travels during the last few years.

But, you don't have to travel to sketch. You just need your paper and pencil - and perhaps a rubber. Inspiration is all around us so go on...do some sketches on your own.

Thanks Ann for the photos.

Upcoming events to note

Please note the following events

The paint-out on the 15th of May will be at Imhoff Farm.  Meet at the entrance to the cafe at 10 am.

We hope that you have all sharpened your pencils ahead of the Drawing Competition   - graphite i.e black, only.  Up to 4 entries per member.  Please bring your work/s to the Hall at 6.30 with an easel or something to stand them on. Start thinking ahead to the Hugh Murdoch Trophy evening in August.  The theme is "shiny things" in any medium - challenging but you are all up to it I'm sure.

As you know we have not been making tea and coffee on the evening meetings as we are helping Nerina to use less water.  On the Crit evening we will be offering wine (at no cost to you), but ask you all to bring a small plate of snacks.
