NEWSLETTER May/June/July 2012

We are happily settled into our new home at Nerina Gardens having held two well attended workshops and a DVD evening in very congenial surroundings. A big thank to Sister Mills for making this lovely hall available to the Society.

Our mini exhibition was very successful thanks to all the members who helped so willingly to make it possible.  The exposure we had being on the Main Road in Fish Hoek was invaluable, and many people came off the street just to browse and exclaim at the high standard and variation of works on exhibit.  In just two and a half days of trading we sold 16 paintings which was great.  Well done and thank you to all the exhibiting artists.  We very much hope that we can have another exhibition of this calibre next year.

Past Events
Tuesday 10 April at 2 pm – A good turnout of members enjoyed the workshop given by John Strickland and Clive Tyler on composition and what to put in or leave out when painting from a photograph.

Tuesday 17 April at 9.30 am – Several members enjoyed the paint-out at Kalk Bay Harbour in spite of the chilly weather.

Wednesday 25 April at 7 pm – The DVD of Klimt’s “The Kiss” was well attended although I suspect that it might have surprised many that the artist was by all accounts a bit of a lad .

Future Events
Tuesday 8 May at 2 pm – A demo/workshop will be given by visiting artist Mary Collis on “Colour and Composition”. Please bring your own materials.

Tuesday 15 May at 9.30 am – We are visiting the pastel and drawing exhibition at Kirstenbosch, and will be meeting at the entrance to the Fish Hoek library at 9 am if anyone would like a lift. Two of our members will be exhibiting – Iain Lamond and Sue Green, so come along and give them your support.

GRAPHITE PENCILS OR STIX ONLY

Tuesday 12 June at 2 pm – Mavis Foale has confirmed that she will give an acrylics workshop entitled “Out of the box”.  Mavis will supply materials at R 10.00 per person.  Mavis is excellent at helping people release the inner artist so her workshop is not to be missed.

Tuesday 19 June at 9.30 am – A  paint- out will be held at the Noordhoek Garden Emporium (on the left before you get to the Noordhoek Farm Village). If the weather is inclement there is a covered stoep where one can sit, draw, paint and have a cup of tea.   Please contact Iain Lamond for more details

Wednesday 25 July at 7.00 pm – Tim Johnson – well known artist – is giving a demo on portraits.  This is the one so many of us have been waiting for, so come along and watch the master at work.

Beginners and more experienced artists are welcome at John Strickland’s Oasis Art Group. John teaches in watercolour, acrylic, oil and pastel.  Phone 021 782-7337 for more information.

An appeal from The Sunflower Fund
The Sunflower Fund, which has set up a register of donors so that children from all ethnic groups suffering from leukaemia and like illnesses can receive bone marrow, has been appealing for help.  The Fund is totally reliant on help from the private sector and without financial support the work of the SABMR would come to a complete halt and bone marrow transplantation would no longer be a treatment option in South Africa.

The Fund has invited artists to paint sunflowers in any medium and donate the work which can then be sold or auctioned. The funds raised would go towards this very worthwhile cause.  If any of you are up to this challenge please phone John Strickland on 021 782-7337

On Sunday 13 May aspirant and practised artists from across the far South are invited to set up an easel or table on Jubilee Square in Simon’s Town.  This is an opportunity to share your love of art with the community. Children are also invited to come to the young artists table.  If the weather is bad the event will be postponed until the Sunday May 20. Keep an eye on the local press for details or phone 021 786-2308 for more information.

FHAS Annual Exhibition, April 2012

Everyone agreed that the annual exhibition was a great success – even more so for being on Fish Hoek Main Road. The exhibition was laid out with great professionalism and drew many favourable comments.
Here are a few photos to remind us of those busy four days.

The official opening, above, was accompanied by a great array of snacks and drinks ensuring artists and guests alike spent a pleasant hour or so among the exhibits.

And, why not be inspired by one of our paint outs? Sometimes they take place in a garden (as seen

above) or in the warmer weather they are often on the beach, occasionally in Kalk Bay harbour or even further afield, the paint outs are a safe and fun way of painting outdoors in the company of other society member.

Newsletter April/May 2012

What an exciting month we have had with the news that the Society will have a new home – Nerina Gardens Hall in Recreation Road Fish Hoek – from the beginning of April.  We hope that you will all come along and enjoy the workshops and evening meetings there in very pleasant surroundings.

We have also managed to rent an empty shop (next to the CNA) in Main Road Fish Hoek, and will be having a mini art exhibition on the afternoon of the 2nd of April and from 10 am until 5 pm on the 3rd 4th and 5th.  Please come along and support the members who are exhibiting.

Past Events

Tuesday 14 Feb at 2 pm – The Wet in Wet workshop given by John Strickland was well attended and enjoyed by all.

Tuesday 21 Feb at 9.30 am – A most enjoyable morning was spent at the Labia Museum exhibition viewing the various artworks, many of which are most innovative and beautiful.  If you haven’t yet visited the Labia we recommend both the exhibition and the tea in the pretty back courtyard.

Tuesday 13 March at 2 pm – Iain Lamond‘s drawing workshop was exceptionally well attended and we all learnt a lot about perspective and tonal values.

Tuesday 20 March at 9.30 – The paint-out at the home of Alex Johnston was held on a sunny summer morning and much enjoyed by the 8 members who were very happy to sit and sketch or paint by the waterside. There was so much activity with paddlers and birds, apart from the flowers in pots and beautiful mountain views that it was difficult to know what to paint. Thank you Alex for making your lovely home available, and for the refreshments.

Wednesday 28 March at 7 pm – The evening meeting was very well attended. Unfortunately Philip Barlow could not show his artwork as he was unable to “marry” his Apple I-pad with the computer in spite of several of our computer geniuses trying their best to set it up.  As it was difficult for Philip to talk about his work without visual reference he couldn’t give his usual presentation but promised to come back at another time.  A very interesting DVD on watercolour techniques using large flat brushes and pieces of cellulose sponge was shown instead, which fascinated the captive audience.

Apologies to all those who came especially to see Philip’s work.

Future Events

Wednesday 25 April at 7 pm – A DVD about Gustav Klimt’s “The Kiss” will be shown in the Nerina Gardens HallNot to be missed.

Tuesday 8 May at 2 pm – A demo/workshop will be given by visiting artist Mary Collis on “Colour and Light”. Please bring your own materials.

Tuesday 12 June at 2 pm – Mavis Foale, who is a past master at getting one to relax and express art in different ways, will be giving us a workshop on acrylics. Mavis usually supplies materials at a very low cost.

There are some very interesting workshops and demos in the pipeline which we will confirm in our next newsletter.
