NEWSLETTER August/September 2012

Although it has been a cold and rainy couple of months it has been well worth going through just to see how beautiful the gardens are now that they have had a lot of watering and we are nearing the warmer months.  Some species of aloes are blooming, daisies are flowering the minute the sun is out, and the various greens must surely inspire artists to pick up their brushes.  The whales have been sighted in the Bay and there have been quite a few dolphin schools around too.

Past Events

Wednesday 23 May at 7 pm – some very good work was exhibited at the drawing competition.  The winner was John Strickland and second place was shared by yours truly and Yvonne Currie.  Third place went to Val Parry.  Congratulations, and well done to all those who entered.

Tuesday 12 June at 2 pm – Mavis Foale gave a well attended workshop on acrylics. If you are not aware of Mavis’ excellent teaching skills it would be well worth your time to attend her next workshop.  She really does inspire artists to stretch their imaginations.

Wednesday 27 June at 7 pm – Philip Barlow gave an interesting talk on his life, art, and what inspired him to paint, but the evening was poorly attended due to the very bad weather.

Wednesday 25 July at 7.00 pm – Tim Johnson gave us a fascinating slide show and talk on how to go about painting a portrait.  His advice and knowledge of the subject were much appreciated by the large audience.

Future Events

Tuesday 14 August at 2 pm – Tim Johnson will be following up his talk on portraiture with a workshop. Please bring your own materials.  You may also bring a half finished portrait to work on. This should be a very useful workshop, so if you are able to come Tim will be able to give you a lot of help.

Tuesday 21 August at 9.30 am – a paint out at Kalkies in Kalk Bay or the Longbeach Mall if the weather is not conducive to working outside.

Wednesday 22 August at 7 pm

*    Paintings to be brought to the Hall between 6.30 and 7 pm

Tuesday 11 September at 2 pm – Hans Zwets will be giving a workshop on making crepe paper flowers.  This will be a fun afternoon and the finished product is very pretty. Crepe paper, florist wire and tape will be provided at R 5.00 a person.  Please bring some scissors and glue with you.

Tuesday 18 September at 9.30 am – paint out to the Llama and Ostrich farm in Noordhoek.  Please contact John Strickland on 021 782-7337 for more information.

There is talk of FHAS, STAG and the Constantia Art Group joining up for paint outs, but we will keep you well informed if that comes to fruition.

Wednesday 26 September at 7 pm – to round off the Portrait talk and workshop a DVD - Rolf Harris’ Star Portraits - will be shown. For those interested in portraiture it is fascinating to see how differently three artists in the film view their subject, and a lot can be learnt by watching their various techniques and approaches.

I am happy to report that John Strickland’s beautiful sunflower painting raised R 800 at the Sunflower Foundation auction.  Well done John.
