Relooking at Hazel Soan's work

Replacing an evening with Hazel Soan and her wonderful works is, of course, not possible in her absence. But we were privileged to have the use of her slides for a re-run and analysis of the valuable lessons we had learned from her previous visit.

John Strickland ran the interesting and relaxing evening and 15 members - plus two visitors - attended. It was a good turnout not only due to the theme but also in part to the mild weather.

Among the tips that are fundamental to her (and one hopes, our!) work were the use of light against dark, the care taken to create an interesting or unusual composition, and the lack of necessity to 'finish' everything letting the spectator observe and deduce himself.

Once again this British artist inspired us to be more creative and hopefully to improve our approach to painting.

Photos were taken by member Rob Mc Alpine - whom we hope will take more excellent photos for the Society in the future.

Tea and refreshment were served and the library was open as usual.

Annual Drawing Competition

The annual Fish Hoek Art Society drawing competition took place on Wednesday May 28th and was a very pleasant evening with a good attendance.

Some 24 members were present bringing with them varied and interesting examples of different drawing techniques.

First prize (and third) was won by Maya McCormack, and was entitled Mans and Street Scene.

The second prize went to Alex Johnson for her drawing entitled Wood.

Here are some of the entries including the winners.

March Exhibition

It was a fairly fast decision but members were keen to exhibit their work and a temporarily vacant shop came up on Fish Hoek Main Road.

So, the 2014 late summer exhibition was staged before Easter and drew a fair amount of interest.
Once again, FHAS were aided by the excellent presentation, another Zwets family cooperation, which displayed members' works in a professional an attractive way.

Here are some photos to remind us of the event.
