Travelling with a sketch book - John Strickland

On the evening of July 22nd, John gave a very fascinating account of his travels with pictures and sketches. His wife, Jen, was present also and she ably filled in many a gap in the itinerary and narrative.

John showed us his lovely sketchbooks which were made by Di Breeze, another talented FHAS member, and the little painting and drawing kit that he travels with.

John gave a few tips and some words of encouragement to anyone thinking of recording their travels in this way.

The couple travelled  through Jordan, Israel and Egypt with many tales of customs, climate and food (Note John's headgear!).

John's sketches of Petra were extremely interesting and the little comic 5-minute sketches of people they saw on their travels were very amusing.

They are planning to visit Russia in August so we look forward to more sketches in due course.

The evening was enjoyed by 16 members and seven guests who stayed for tea and a chat afterwards.

SCULPTING FUN

It was a great workshop - everyone agreed! And an excellent turnout: 16 members and nine guests attended Peter Ford's informative afternoon.
Peter supplied the armatures and we all were challenged to make a sculpture of our fancy.  He set a few models around for inspiration but it was up to our own imagination to make something.
It was really great fun, very different from many other workshops and much enjoyed by all taking part.
In a few weeks time we will have a collective firing of our efforts and we will be able to judge our 'oeuvre'.

Peter Jander visits

Talented artist Peter Jander entertained and informed the 18 members and three guests who braved the rather inclement weather to enjoy an evening with this artist.  His personality, charming impressionistic paintings, sound advice and sometime quirky suggestions, had everyone enthralled and enthused.

Remember some of the key suggestions:
set goals and work towards them
try out things even if you are hesitant
experiment with ideas and techniques
Don't let failure stand in the way of your enthusiasm
He suggested painting with music even singing along is good for encouraging the artistic spirit.

Thank you Peter. A great evening!
