The Alma Byng evening in retrospect

We're doing something right, even if we're a small group!

30 members and friends attended the evening and much enjoyed the exhibit, the snacks and drinks afterwards.

Our guest judge this year, Audrey Innes (SASA's current president) was very flattering about the standard of work from such a small society.

In total there were 63 entries (compared with 80 last year) but the quality was - according to Mrs Innes - very high.

For once, a fabulous pastel won. Let's do more pastels and WELL DONE Sue Green, FHAS's bookkeeping and keen pastelist. She was thrilled and indeed she should be for her lovely study of a yellow leucadendron was impressive.

Making Christmas cards - a fun workshop

Jenny Strickland hosted the afternoon Christmas card workshop this year and the results were wonderful!

Paint out in Kalk Bay

FHAS convened this week for its paint out at Lever Park, Kalk Bay.
Once again the weather was extremely pleasant and this poplar small park is popular was full of interest for us. Buildings, people, dogs and flowers gave us a variety of subjects. And although there was some live entertainment with a young man singing and playing his guitar we as a group of eight artists also generated our fair share of interest!

Maureen, thanks again for recording the outing and sharing your photos.

capturing animals - a workshop

Backtracking a couple of weeks, Sue and John gave a workshop on painting animals. Think zebras, think stripes. Not always a breeze to capture - this is at best a challenge but their tips and tricks made it all seem far easier to tackle. Sue brought along a computer and had put much effort in preparing this workshop.
Unfortunately for the demonstrators, few folk turned up for the afternoon.

Participation at the FH Flower Show

One again the Fish Hoek Flower Show in October was an opportunity for members of FHAS to participate and show their paintings, cards and other botanically related art works.
Members Maureen, Cynthia and Maureen were all successful in selling some of their works.

Another wonderful paint out!

This month members gathered at one of FHAS's favourite local haunts: Pooh Corner at Noordhoek.

Inspired by the sun, the prolific vegetation, eight FHAS members were delighted with the morning. The riverine setting, copious greenery and all those little nooks and crannies in the garden, afforded everyone the chance to choose their own favourite spot.

We thank Maureen Copley for recording the event and sending photos.

Glorious day and a paint out at Simon's Town

Are we lucky or it is just chance?!?

So many of our recent paint-out reunions have been on sunny days, enforcing the colours and, even better, without too much wind to whisk those watercolours up into the air and beyond.

This month nine FHAS members and friends went along to Simon's Town Yacht Club and were challenged by the very full marina of masts and hulls. Watercolour was the preferred medium, though some good pen and wash paintings were also accomplished.

This venue is especially good very early in the artist's morning or later in the afternoon as it is a challenge looking into the direction of the sun. But that didn't deter us!

Thanks again to Rob McAlpine for recording the event.

Di Breeze presents pen and wash workshop

This month's workshop was chaired by Di Breeze who is a long time doyenne of pen and wash technique and one of the longest-standing members of FHAS.

She brought some sketch books to show us and a few mounted works.

Some 15 people enjoyed the afternoon and although it wasn't in the usual venue  in the complex, we were made very comfortable in the cafĂ© at Nerina.

Di emphasised the necessity to ensure a balance between penwork and paint – ensuring that artists do not overdo either.

Di showed us that she favours a good quality watercolour paper, five different sized dip, fountain or Unipens for a variety of thicknesses of lines.

Starting with a rough, light pencil sketch of the prominent features, she then uses waterproof ink for light loose broken lines taking care not to let any part overpower the picture.

Members used watercolour, pencil and aquarelles to add the colour emphasis.

We have Rob and Maureen to thank for photographing the workshop, and another thank you
to Maureen for the information.
