Alma Byng Trophy and the end of the year events

To make sure that we have a really good Alma Byng evening please read through the notes below.

Just a reminder that John Strickland will be giving a workshop on painting clouds wet-in-wet method on Tuesday 12th of November at 2 pm. If you struggle with painting realistic clouds then this is the workshop for you.  For the experienced artist you might be interested in John’s innovative way of painting clouds.

The paint-out will be on Tuesday morning 9.30 on the 19th of November.  The venue is Eastlake Island Marina da Gama.  Please phone Alex Johnston on 021 788-2244 for details. Those who are interested in painting out in such a lovely venue could get together and go in one or two cars.

ALMA BYNG COMPETITION AND END OF YEAR PARTY – WED 27 NOVEMBER

Dawn Schrock, who runs Rhodes Cottage in Muizenberg, has asked if some of our members’ paintings could be hung there.  If you are interested please contact Dawn for more details on 021 785-7194

AUGUST ACTIVITIES

Proving that winter can also be a creative time, we had two well attended events this month. And the standard of work was high.

Firstly, we had our portrait workshop and this was great fun.
Lorraine England kindly sat (very) still for the session and proved an excellent model.

We did various 10-minute sketches to start the session then went into a more detailed work.
A very successful afternoon!

The next event was the Hugh Murdock Trophy, held in the evening.

This year's theme was ON A SUNDAY, the interpretation and medium open to each artist.
The judging proved difficult for over 20 members brought works to be judged - and they were of a very, high standard.

Appetising snacks and drinks kept the evening going until the three winners were announced.

Above: Val Parry's oil painting and, right, John Strickland's pen and wash of himself in a hammock.

Tim Johnson earned the third prize with a delightful picture of his grandchildren in the bath. Alex Johnston bagged the second, with her watercolour of hikers setting off on the Oystercatchers' Trail while Val Parry, walked off with the trophy for her whimsical oil painting of a person resting in a door alcove, bike propped up on the wall and (smelly?) boots off the feet.

13 August – 2 pm  This will be a portrait workshop and a patient person will be asked to sit for us.

20 August – Paint-out at 9.30 am  There is a wealth of interesting things to paint or draw in Simon’s Town – yachts, water, buildings, alley ways and people.  Those interested should please meet at the entrance to False Bay Yacht Club where there is plenty of safe parking.

28 August – 7 pm
THE HUGH MURDOCH TROPHY COMPETITION
THEME- ON A SUNDAY

For an idea what the French used to get up to on a sunny Sunday, turn to that great pointillist, Seurat!!

So, what do you do? or don't you do? Active, lazy, working, reflecting. Sunday is different to all of us. Give us your version of a Sunday.

Work should be brought to the hall between 6 and 6.30 pm with your signature covered.  Please bring a small plate of snacks with you.  There will be more information given nearer the date, but in the meantime please read through the rules and guidelines at the end of the newsletter to avoid disappointment.

Hands and Art

Tuesday's July workshop was a little out of the ordinary - and much enjoyed by all the participants.

Peter Ford invited everyone to make a drawing of their hand. So far, so good. Then this drawing was put aside and we all made a model of the same hand in clay.

Then, we drew the hand once more - and were amazed at the improvements we had made in the short hour or so contemplating our non-drawing hand.

The lesson? Observation is the key to good art.

We had a great workshop and the dozen or so participants were delighted with the afternoon.

YVONNE ANKERMAN DEMONSTRATES

This month's demonstration proved to be very popular and was well-attended. We hope to see as many members and guests at the upcoming demos and workshops in the winter months!

Yvonne Ankerman offered to demonstrate the use of a palette knife to create a painting and in the course of the evening produced two beautiful works, resonating with bold hues.

It was inspiration for all of us.

Yvonne kindly generously the painting of the cock for raffle and Rob McAlpine was the lucky winner.

Fired up by the demo, we approached Yvonne to return once more later in the year for a Tuesday afternoon workshop and we hope very much this will be a possibility.

Watch the online Fish Hoek Art Society newsletter for further information and dates.

June Paint Out - The Wetlands, Clovelly

A beautiful day - and a handful of artists to do it justice.
This month's paint out was in the Wetland area, between Clovelly and Peer's Hill, just south of the golf course. Here, the views towards Peers Cave, Chapman's Peak and Constantiaberg are impressive.

Artists settled comfortably on their own chairs and others used the in situ options in conjunction with their seating arrangements. John looks perfectly at ease with his spot.
Almost windless and with that clear light of early winter, it was a delightful morning.

The view towards Peers Cave. Di Breeze's delicate pen and wash.

Come join us and produce some beautiful work - and if it doesn't come up to your exacting standards, at least you will have fun with other keen painters!

July's paint out is kindly hosted by John Strickland, in his Clovelly garden. Check out address details in the previous posting.

NEWSLETTER July and August

Winter has definitely arrived and we are tempted to stay indoors and keep warm.  There are beautiful days in-between the rain though; the mountains are greener the aloes are blooming and the skies wonderful so wrap up, take a walk and your cameras, and be inspired by Mother Nature. For the not so hardy, try a different medium.  Sue and Tim certainly inspired us with pastel and computer art and it’s always good to get out of one’s comfort zone.

The mural on the wall in 2nd Avenue Fish Hoek is sorely in need of some TLC.  John Strickland is going to have a look to assess the deterioration, and if he feels that we could do some repair work we will need some willing volunteers to help.  We could have a morning of great fellowship while keeping Fish Hoek beautiful.

A warm welcome to our newest member – Lesley Luyt.

Thank you to all the members who have paid their dues this year.

PAST EVENTS
Our mini exhibition at Long Beach Mall on the 5th of May was a huge success and we had nine busy artists either exhibiting their work, or sitting quietly and painting.  Val Parry was a busy lady doing portraits, and there was a lot of interest from the public in general. We are considering having another Saturday morning exhibition at the Mall sometime in October. We hope that those who were not able to participate this time will consider showing their work, or using the morning as a paint-out.

14 May – Workshop
Val Parry ran a very useful workshop ahead of the drawing competition and all those who participated enjoyed the afternoon. Thank you Val for being such a committed member of our Society and for always being available to help and share your experience and expertise.

The weather for the Water’s Edge paint-out was good, and the five artists who spent the morning there enjoyed themselves.

It was agreed that the venue was beautiful but there was a marathon hike by one of our artists to find a loo, so this particular spot does have its drawbacks!

The drawing competition held on the 22nd of May was not particularly well supported but I think that all those who were there had a very enjoyable evening. Clive Tyler gave an impromptu talk on the rules and guidelines for competitions which allowed for a relaxed exchange of ideas and suggestions.
The standard of work submitted was very high, and we are pleased that a new member took both first and third prize.  Val Parry’s portrait of Betty Salmon was awarded second prize.

FUTURE EVENTS
Please make an effort to attend some or all of these.  Nerina Gardens Hall is lovely and warm and there is plenty of parking just across the road from the centre.

4 June – 2 pm
John Strickland will be giving another workshop on sketching, a subject that many of you are interested in. Bring along whatever materials you would like to work with.

18 June – Paint-out  at 9.30 am
John Strickland has kindly offered the use of his studio or garden, depending on the weather.  His address is 15 Winkle Way, Clovelly and you can reach him on 021 782-7337.

26 June – 7 pm
Yvonne Ankerman, a local and international selling artist will be giving us a demonstration on the use of a palette knife to create colourful and interesting textures in oils.  Please come along and watch Yvonne’s special brand of magic.

9 July – 2 pm
We are hoping to have a sculpting afternoon and will let you know as soon as we have confirmed who will be running it.

16 July – Paint-out at 9.30
The Labia Museum in Muizenberg has very kindly offered us the use of one of their magnificent rooms.  Please note that we will not be allowed to use any “wet” mediums, so bring along pencils, crayons etc.  You will be able to buy tea, coffee and cake during the morning and those who would like to have lunch there should let us know beforehand. Please contact Franziska on 021 788-1765.

24 July – 7 pm
A DVD – “Light in Interiors” by Ken Howard will be shown.  This is a film worth seeing if you struggle with capturing light in your work.

13 August – 2 pm
This will be a portrait workshop and a patient person will be asked to sit for us.

20 August – Paint-out at 9.30 am

And the winner is...

Fish Hoek Art Society held its annual drawing competition. Where were you? A poor turn out but a fine work from the winner.
The competition was good fun. Clive ran through the rules and regulations governing entries for this, and other competitions. We seem to have got this straight at last.

President Cindy presents the prize to the well deserving winner, Suzette Duby.

A surprise, too.

Not only is Suzette a new member of the Society but a gifted one: she took both first and third prize with her beautiful works. The Otter study, below left, clinched the first prize.

Val Parry (photo above: sitting next to Cindy and beside talented husband/artist, David), took the second prize for a fine portrait of Betty Salmon, another excellent artist and fellow member of Fish Hoek Art Society.

Work such as this is an inspiration to us all and we look forward to the challenges provided in future competitions by such competent pieces of art.

FHAS goes public in LONGBEACH MALL

On Saturday 4th May, a group of artists from Fish Hoek Art Society set up tables and easels in Longbeach Mall as part of an awareness campaign for the Society.

The venue proved light and airy - it was at the 'crossroads' between the second entrance and the Mall and thus at a strategic point for shoppers coming into or going from the Mall.

A variety of styles and media were on show and artist Val Parry did portrait sketches on the spot.

NEWSLETTER May and June 2013

With our annual drawing competition being held at the end of May it is important that you read the rules posted previously on the internet.

The rules are not drawn up to be petty or officious but to set a standard that everyone is comfortable with. We hope that our new members will participate and not feel intimidated by artists who have been exhibiting and entering competitions for years. The competitions are fun and it is lovely to see what the members produce.

A warm welcome to our newest member – Cynthia Fletcher.

PAST EVENTS
12 March - The Adolfo McQue afternoon was unfortunately poorly attended, but the few of us who were there were impressed by how quickly Adolfo painted a landscape without even a photo as a reference.  It is an inspiration to watch such a relaxed artist at work.

19 March - Third time lucky!!  On a beautiful morning 7 of us went to the Ohio Farm in Noordhoek for a paint out.  What a lovely setting – an avenue of very old oak trees, a lily pond, paddocks with alpacas peacefully grazing, and a lovely farmhouse – anything and everything to inspire one.  If we do another paint out there, perhaps in Spring, red ring it in your diary as a must.

27 March - Tim Johnson exceled himself by giving us a wonderful presentation and talk on digital art. There were many questions about this very 21st century art form and Tim graciously satisfied everyone’s curiosity.  For the aspiring and accomplished artist alike, seeing what you can do with the available software is enlightening, and a very useful tool.

9 April – The event was very well supported with more and more tables being set up as members arrived. The lovely energetic Sonia Jacka worked us hard at the “values” workshop but I am sure that everyone who was there thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon.

Please make every effort to get to afternoons workshops in good time to set up before the guest speaker starts at 2 pm.  It is distracting to the person doing the workshop if he or she has to stop because of late arrivals.

Our exhibition held at the Garden of Remembrance on the 13th of April was great fun, and the weather was luckily warm with the pesky southeaster playing the game for a change.  It was a pity that more artists didn’t come along to show their work, but those who did enjoyed the morning.  It is good to know that Alderman Felicity Purchase was very enthusiastic about us being there, and is encouraging us to do it again.

It is a very easy venue with parking so close, and with the various levels in the garden there are many places to set up.  Later in the morning quite a few people wandered in and admired the paintings.  Hopefully more of you will participate if we do another Saturday morning in Spring.

16 April – The weather for the Kalk Bay Harbour paint out was not good, but a few intrepid artists settled themselves at Kalkys and made the most of the morning.

24 April – Sue Green, our hard working treasurer and librarian, gave a very informative and interesting talk on the history and use of pastels.  She showed photos of amazing works that have been done in this medium and dispelled many of the myths surrounding this art form.  I, for one, will definitely be doing more work using pastels.

OUR MINI EXHIBITION AT LONG BEACH MALL
SATURDAY 4 MAY 9.30 AM UNTIL 2 PM

Cindy has done a lot of work to get this exhibition up and running and would appreciate it if you could all please take note of the following.

The Mall management has kindly offered us the use of a chair, tablecloth and trestle table FREE for each member.  The space allocated to us is outside the Edgars entrance and Cindy thinks we could accommodate about 6/ 9 artists fairly comfortably (10 with a bit of a squeeze at the trestle tables).

The good thing about the tables is that they are big enough to hold about (depending on size) 4/6 med size paintings still leaving enough space for the artist to work on a painting.

Please phone Cindy on Tel:  021 785 5033 or Cell: 082 925 2935 or e-mail  cindyjb@worldonline.co.za  to book a space – first come first served.  You will unfortunately not be able to participate by just turning up on the day – you will HAVE to book a table with her as she needs to know how many tables to order.   If we have more than 9/10 artists interested, we could arrange some form of shifts. Long Beach Mall has stressed that the area must be kept clean and tidy – no picnic baskets, food or drinks on show and nothing to be pasted to walls, floors etc (as if we would !!).

The added good news is that artists will now be able to sell their work as the Gallery in the Mall has moved to Noordhoek Farm Village, so this is an excellent opportunity, not only to promote the Society, but to show the public what you can do.

For the artists exhibiting – please be at the Mall by 8.30 to set up the tables before the Saturday rush of people.

Events for the coming months – please make every effort to support them. We are privileged to have such vibrant and interesting speakers giving their time so generously for us.

14 May – 2 pm  Workshop – Val Parry has kindly agreed to run this workshop and to go through the criteria for the drawing competition at the end of the month.  You may bring your own article/s to draw, and Val will set up some objects as well.

21 May – 9.30 am Paint- out  Water’s Edge Boulders. If the weather is inclement we can meet at Boulders and decide where to go out of the rain/cold.

22 May – 7 pm  DRAWING COMPETITION criteria at the end of the newsletter.  Please note that you should bring your work/s to the hall at Nerina no later than 6.30 pm

4 June – 2 pm John Strickland will be giving another workshop on sketching, a subject that many of you are interested in.

18 June – 9.30 am - Paint-out – TBA

26 June – 7 pm  Yvonne Ankerman, a local and international selling artist will be giving us a demonstration on the use of a palette knife to create colourful and interesting textures in oils.  Please come along and watch Yvonne’s special brand of magic.

The art section of The Write Shop in Long Beach Mall has expanded and is getting in more stock every day, so pop in from time to time to see what they have.

Workshops – The second Tuesday afternoon of the month at 2 pm. Unless told otherwise, please supply your own materials and paints, etc.

Paint-outs –The third Tuesday morning of the month at 9.30 am.

Evening Meetings – The 4th Wednesday of the month at 7pm unless otherwise indicated in the newsletter. Workshops and monthly meetings are held at Nerina Gardens Hall, Recreation Road, Fish Hoek.
