Events coming up

Good morning members

While the participation from members at the Garden Show was poor we did have good exposure, many people taking flyers about the Society.  Thanks to the committee members for their time to set up, display paintings and be at our stand for the morning.

We only have two months left of this year's activities - calendar below - and I do ask that you come to as many of them as possible.  Karin Davel's workshop next Tuesday should be very interesting and fun (hopefully there won't be any memorial services in the Hall!!).  Our DVD evenings are always very informative and the film that is going to be shown should titillate your creative juices.

The Alma Byng competition is the most important one of the year in that there is a substantial prize involved and gives our members an opportunity to show off their work and enjoy an evening of arty fellowship.  We would really like to see some more paintings done by our newer members.  There are several categories to choose from and you can enter a painting in one or all if you wish to.  Please don't be shy - every work has its charm and merit.  To make the evening fun please come in fun headgear - a prize for the most inventive/colourful.  We will supply wine and fruit juice but ask you all to please bring a small plate of snacks with you.

I will be forwarding an e-mail that I have received about an offer to show and sell paintings.  It is a very good opportunity for us to sell our work.

Thank you Fiona for all the news and interesting articles you put in the blog - no mean feat as you are often travelling.

10-minute challenge to do a drawing

So, you are not out along the West Coast enjoying this year's magnificent flowers... Then how about the challenge of some Spanish sunshine?

Your choice: the fruit bowl (don't bother with the background) and a pretty collection of wall pots spotted in a village. The shadows were part of the attraction.

The idea is to do a quick 10-minute sketch and then should you want to do a more concentrated study, you can redo it, with a much better feel for the subject.

The Hugh Murdoch Trophy evening

The 2018 Hugh Murdoch trophy evening was another milestone in the FHAS calendar this week.

A chilly evening but a good turnout with 14 members showing a range of interpretations on the theme of ‘Bright, shiny things’. We also had five visitors and some partners swelling the numbers present.

The winner was Val Parry with her evocative seascape.
Second place went Ann Zwets for her water colour of reflections in candelabra and silver jug.

Third place was awarded to Cynthia Fletcher for her pastel work of copper pots and cans

So, now the next trophy evening, the Alma Byng, will be at the end of November – plenty of time !  Information on the event will be sent our during October newletter but here are the
    categories to   refresh your memories:

TOWNSCAPE OR BUILDINGS
SEASCAPES, BOATS AND HARBOURS

 Happy painting.

Thanks again to Rob for the photos.

A paintout at Doug and Alison James' home

Fine weather and a bird's eye view of Simon's Town were just two attractions of our paintout at Doug and Alison James' home.

Doug is, as you will all remember, an active member of FHAS. Keen gardeners, there were also many interesting plants to paint and draw - apart from the bird's eye view.

Some nine members of FHAS brought along their paints and easels and had a wonderful time.

Many thanks for the hospitality and thanks to Rob McAlpine for recording the event.

August portrait workshop

Despite our usual hall being unavailable, we enjoyed a challenging afternoon workshop drawing Chrissie who Kindly modelled for us.

18 members and friends brought along their pencils, crayons and paints to Nerina and gave some interesting and some good renditions of our model.

Thanks Cynthia for recording the workshop and supplying us with good photos.

A fun and thought-provoking workshop.

A novel venue at Nerina, outside in the winter sunshine, proved to be an excellent one for the interesting workshop run by Melanie Meyer.

A good number of FHAS members and friends came to be inspired by this enthusiastic artist who gave time to each of us and took us - in some cases - way out of our comfort zones!

Use colour, forget photo-real form, feel anger, happiness, sadness - whatever!

Entwining these elements  made for some interesting sketches and ideas from the many participants who were not usually challenged to look at painting or drawing in this way.

A very agreeable afternoon!

Thanks to Rob again for the photos.
